The Next Design Innovation: Learning from Nature

Start:
Sat, 2015/08/22
Location:
Morton Arboretum, Chicago, IL

This course is not Biomimicry 101. During our time together, you will immerse yourself innature’s water, energy, waste, and resilience strategies by walking our native ecosystems with a local biomimic and ecologist while exploring the biomimicry toolkit and resources. This training will give you the tools and resources you need to create locally-attuned buildings, communities, and environments that “fit in” again with the ecosystems they inhabit, making the achievement of green building benchmark standards, such as LEED and the Living Building Challenge, intuitive and natural.

At the next session in August, you will:

  • Discover nature’s sustainability strategies and practice “biologizing” the challenge on an excursion to the Big Rock Visitor Station and surrounding woodlands at the Morton Arboretum;
  • Emulate nature’s design strategies and generate new ideas in a fun, interactive Design Jam;
  • Recognize “Life’s Principles,”specifically “Integrate Development with Growth” and “Use Life Friendly Chemistry,” and give examples for how they can be applied to the context of the built environment; and
  • Apply what you learn to your own context through completion of a mentored assignment.
