This post provides a short review of Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity.  Although the emphasis is on "medicines, biomedical and agricultural research, and new materials", the book also covers ecosystem services, the impact on infectious diseases and the relationship of food production on biodiversity.  The BBC News article Unnatural roots of the food crisis describes how our desire for cheap, abundant food has lead to industrial agriculture, which in turn has undermined the ecosystems on which our agriculture depends.
