Animator Phil Tippett discusses use of natural phenomenon as reference and inspiration for popular film characters throughout his career.  Topics include natural but extinct characters (Jurassic Park), mechanical characters (Star Wars), biomechanical characters (Robocop 2), mythological characters (Dragonslayer), characters from the realm of science fiction (Starship Troopers), and others.  Mr. Tippett relates the development and animation of these characters to observations from the natural world.He provides personal insights into the creative process, as well as anecdotes from his time on-set across a wide range of cinema productions.  Demo clips of examples of his work are at: www.tippett.com

Biography
 Phil Tippett’s career of more than 30 years in animation and visual effects spans innovative use of stop motion and the gradual, capability enhancing transition to computer generated imagery (CGI) effects.  While working for Industrial Light and Magic and later his own Tippett Studio, his study of movement in nature enabled him to lead the creation of interesting and entertaining ‘creatures’ in numerous films — including Dragonslayer, the Star Wars series, the Jurassic Park series, and others.  His recognition includes two Academy Awards® and six nominations, one BAFTA award and four nominations, two Emmys, and the prestigious Winsor McCay and Georges Méliès awards.
