Research Associate: Evaluating Biological Interpretations of Urbanism

Duties and Responsibilities
The Bartlett School of Planning seeks to appoint a Research Associate with a background in Life Sciences, Philosophy of Science, Science Communication or related areas to work on the Self-Organising Built Environment project: https://naturbanism.wordpress.com/. Working within the context of a trans-disciplinary project, the post-holder will be expected to play a decisive role in (a) evaluating the biological content of urban design/planning literature, and (b) synthesising a knowledge mapping of concepts and relationships between the built environment and biological domains; and (c) contributing core material for project dissemination and impact. The post-holder will also assist with organising project seminars and workshops and other related events.
This is an exceptional opportunity to play a key role in this project, part of UCL’s ground-breaking Centre for Nature-Inspired Engineering, funded by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Frontier Research programme http://www.natureinspiredengineering.org.uk/. In addition to UCL, project collaborators are from the Universities of Bristol, Edinburgh, Oxford and the State University of New York. The project is an exciting combination of cross-disciplinary academic scrutiny and synthesis, with the potential for international impact.
 
Key Requirements
The successful applicant will have been awarded (or be working towards) a PhD in life sciences, Philosophy of Science, Science Communication, Science and Technology Studies or related field. They will be proficient in critically scrutinising literature employing concepts and analogies from the life sciences, and creatively interpreting concepts and analogies between disciplines. They will have an excellent ability in academic writing and presentational skills, to deliver clear, accurate outputs suitable for academic audiences.
 
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD (or having the equivalent experience). If this is not the case, the initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (£29,809
- £31,432 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of PhD thesis.
